  1. Resistors

A resistor is an electrical component that can be found in almost all electronic circuits and networks. The measurement for this is done in units known as ohms. What it does is it creates resistance in the flow of electric current. A resistor is used for many purposes. They include establishing electric current, matching and loading circuits, voltage division, etc. You will be able to determine a resistor with its shape which is a rectangular one. That is the international IEC symbol. Resistors can also be divided into several types and materials. It can be fixed resistors, variable resistors such as a potentiometer, rheostat, and trimpot. If we talk about the breakdown of the material, it can also be made of a carbon film, metal film, foil, and much more. These certain types and materials are made specific to its purpose.

A capacitor, or previously known as a condenser, is a two-terminal electronic component that is used to store energy temporarily.  It is usually measured in microfarads.  This component is widely used in televisions, radios, and all other kinds of electronic equipment.  Capacitors come in different shapes and sizes but all contain these two basic components: an electrical conductor (plates) and a dielectric (insulator). The conductors could be disks or aluminum foils while a dielectric can be glass or ceramic. Capacitors are broadly utilized for blocking direct current while enabling rotating current to pass. For instance, in resonant circuits, they tune radios to specific frequencies. While a capacitor’s function is mainly for storing energy, it can also be out to use differently in electrical circuits. For instance, it can be used as a filter, for tuning in radios and TV’s, or as a timing device. And oftentimes, large supercapacitors can even be used as a replacement for batteries.

  1. Diodes

A diode is a component with two terminals which allows electric current to flow in a single direction only. These two terminals are called the anode and cathode. An anode is charged with a positive voltage while cathode with a negative voltage. The current flows from the anode to the cathode, which means we have an electric current flow or the energy is flowing from a source. If you reverse these voltages, it will prevent the current from flowing. How it functions is it allows an electric current to pass in one direction, while at the same time, blocking current from the opposite direction. Its characteristics are more likely you can compare to a switch.
